Servo drives for a small craft towing tank

Estonia’s small craft and ship builders needed close-to-reality test conditions to be able to develop safe, fast, and energy-efficient and materials-efficient hulls.

In cooperation with AS Baltic Workboats, we fulfilled the order which had been placed by TTU Kuressaare college’s Small Craft Competence Centre to design, deliver, and install Lenze servo drives as well as power and safety systems for the hull carriage and the wave generator. The servo drives are operated over EtherCat. The sixty-metre towing tank is used to study the characteristics of various small craft models at different speeds and in wave conditions.

The wave generator has six individually servo-controlled laps, which allows almost any possible waveform to be formed according to mathematical formulae.
